First Indian Fencer in Olympics: Bavani Devi




The Indian Fencer, Bhavani Devi, made a remarkable mark. She becomes the first Indian fencer to qualify for Olympics in Women’s individual Sabre.In addition to it, she is the first Indian to win gold medal in Senior Commonwealth fencing championship .The fencer will take part in the Tokyo Olympics which is scheduled to be organised from July 23, 2021 to August 8, 2021.

Her name is Chadalavada Anandha Sundhararaman Bhavani Devi. She was born on 27 August 1993. The Indian sabre gets support from GoSports Foundation under the Rahul Dravid Athlete Mentorship Programme.Her coach Sagar Laghu( Sports Authority of India) and her coach from Italy. The upcoming Tokyo Olympics is scheduled to be held from July 23 to August 28, 2021.

After Covid 19 – pandemic, this Sabre world Cup, is the first international event on sabre, in Budapest. As the corona wave spreads even more, Flights are in high demand. So, Bavani and her coach Zonatti, travelled by road for 10 long hours from Italy to Budapest. Corona restrictions were so severe that, they weren’t allowed to leave the hotel, except for the venue.

“I had been waiting for this moment all my life.” Says Bhavani Devi.

She spent around five years leaving her family,to excel in her career. She says, her stream of sport is not recognised in Indi. so , She puts more efforts to gain her chance. There comes a moment of satisfaction when people recognise talents, which are grown by several sacrifices.
