Four more airports for Tamil Nadu under regional scheme




The Union government sanctioned money to build airports at Neyveli, Vellore, Ramanathapuram and Thanjavur this year. This a part of Udan, the regional connectivity scheme.

Salem airport got Rs 35 crore of which Rs 15.97 crore spent to create facilities by the Airports Authority of India (AAI). Similarly work in progress at Vellore, Neyveli and Thanjavur. Five airports identified under various rounds of bidding under regional connectivity scheme Udan.

The government already sanctioned Rs 35 crore for Salem, Rs 30 crore for Neyveli, Rs 44 crore for Vellore, Rs 36.72 crore for Ramnathapuram, Rs 50.59 crore for Thanjavur. AAI awarded 37 routes under Udan in Tamil Nadu till three rounds of bidding. Of these, 12 routes operationalized by the airlines. An official said the airports ready but then airlines not sure to fly planes. “Puducherry itself is not profitable. Why would anyone fly to Vellore and Neyveli,” said an official. Therefore AAI cancelled 19 routes due to non-compliance of selected airline operator agreement.
