The elderly, politicians and a few other categories, including teachers, in Tamil Nadu. This get their COVID-19 vaccine doses much ahead of the mid-March schedule. This if the state government has its way. The Tamil Nadu government sought the Centre’s nod to prioritise the elderly, people with comorbidities, politicians, teachers and journalists for vaccination. Similarly citing huge gatherings in election campaigns for polls due in May and low turnout at vaccination centres.

The state government said by prioritising these categories, the underutilised vaccine doses put to good use.

This comes even as the state suffers from vaccine avoidance among health and frontline workers. Similarly Tamil Nadu saw a poor vaccination patronage of around 50 per cent in the first and second phases of the inoculation drive.

Health officials also explain that unlike other states people in Tamil Nadu quite conservative when it comes to vaccines. Besides wait and watch policy, many questions on trial norm compliance, and some also misled by rumours.

Tamil Nadu’s daily COVID-19 count now come down from around 7,000 to about 450.
