Badam Pisin / Almond Gum – a must have kitchen ingredient this summer




Tired of summer ? Not hungry ? Have a thirst for liquid drinks ? Having sweet tooth ? Wanna a cool drink that feels full and reduces body heat this summer ? – there is a one stop solution to all these queries. Yes! –Badam Pisin aka Almond Gum.

It is locally referred as Badam Pisin in South India. Whereas, in other areas, it has a name called – Badam Gondh. Its source is not from normal Almond tree, instead from the sweet almond tree botanically named as Prunus Dulcis. These Gums are collected mostly from aged trees, because after collection, the flowering parts and the leaves will reduce in number.

This Gum is either colourless, pale yellow and pale brown in colour. It resembles tiny rocks that are of crystalline form. They do not please the taste buds though. But, once we are aware of its explicit Health benefits, we might develop a liking towards it.

It is one of the most easily and naturally available coolant, especially during summer. Due to this property, it is widely used in desserts, drinks and simply as a empty stomach intake. It gains attention, mainly after its infusion in South India’s speciality – Madurai Jigarthanda.

It helps in both weight loss and gain. To gain weight, mix pisin in milk and add sugar and sip it. It helps in weight loss, just by eating the soaked Pisin ( soak the gum in water overnight ). As this, keeps the tummy full, thus avoid our cravings for snacks and meals.

Further, it reduces acidity and stomach ulcers. It plays its role as antioxidant too, as it distances from premature ageing. Mainly, it reverses the lost metabolism, and helps gaining back nutrition and menstrual cycle. In India, during older days,Pregnant women were given Gondh Ladoos ( Almond Ladoos) after Pregnancy, as it revives the nutrition.

Even during pregnancy, women are asked to include these Gums( as per doctor’s advice) to ensure that the child in the womb gets access to all the necessary nutrients. These Gums have the capacity to strengthen bones, joints and muscles of the Physical body.It also helps children in boosting memory power, immunity, reducing anxiety and weaknesses.

Speaking of its unmatched benefits, this is widely noted as – it maintains the perfect insulin levels of the body, thereby maintains lower cholesterol levels. It acts as anti-allergic agent too. Additionally, it helps in reducing the formation of heat boils In skin.

All these being the benefits, remember that too much of anything is bad. Be cautious of the quantity you consume. If it exceeds a limit, you may experience Choking, Nervous problem, weakness and Gastric problems as well.

But, still enjoy the summer, with this natural coolant in smaller portions. Make use of this multifaceted gum, that is readily available at the doorsteps. Stay cool this summer.
