Severe cyclone ‘Nivar’ intensifies into a very severe cyclonic storm. It is likely to cross the coast between Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. This before dawn on Thursday.
In a tweet posted by Official Twitter handle of AAI Chennai Airport it tweeted, “Due to #CycloneNivar aircraft operations at #AAI #Chennaiairport will remain suspended from 1900hrs of 25.11.2020 (today) to 0700hrs of 26.11.2020 (tmrw).The decision taken considering the safety aspect of passengers and the severity of approching Cyclone.”
In its latest bulletin, the IMD said Nivar cross over between Karaikal and Mamallapuram. This during the midnight of November 25 and early hours of 26 November.
The storm, 250 km off Chennai and 190 km and 180 km from Puducherry and Cuddalore respectively. Similarly very likely to move northwestwards. And cross coasts as a very severe cyclonic storm. With a wind speed of 120-130 kmph gusting to 145 kmph. Coastal and north interior Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kariakal regions. Likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall.
South coastal Andhra Pradesh also likely to receive rains in most places today. Rainfall expected to continue in many places. Heavy rainfall at some places expected.
Surplus water released from Chembarambakkam lake. This one of the key drinking water sources to the city. Since it almost neared its capacity, the government stated.
PWD officials said 1000 cusecs released from the lake. The level stood at 22 feet of the total 24 feet.
Chennai and its suburbs, received heavy overnight rains. This coupled with strong winds. Low-lying areas getting affected with water entering houses in such localities.
The Tamil Nadu government asked people living in coastal districts to not venture out of their homes. They also requested those living in low lying areas. This to reach the cyclone shelters in their respective regions.
