Food wastage and hunger tugs

” That extra spoon of food, taken after one’s hunger gets over, belongs to those who are really in need of food “

Before pandemic, its rare event to think of –

What kind groceries we should shop ?

Will this be sufficient for the entire family ?

Is this really Healthy ?

Is this necessary or just s luxury ?

Omg! Why is this item so costly ?

Why don’t this vegetable have a long self life?

What ! Again ??.. it’s just been a week after grocery shopping !!!

Recently, corona virus gave a smashing advice to the human. Virus doesn’t know differences – whether you are rich, poor, talented, popular, good hearted, alone, depressed, young, old, religion, country, nothing. It does its job with atmost balance, without favouritism.

And, eventually a threat of hunger made us matured,to be frank. Hopefully, there might be less wastage of food , as we were concerned on its availability in the past year of corona. Only, if a report on Food wastage for the year 2020 is released, the true hunger scenarios of the world will be known.

But, recently United Nations Environment Programme ( UNEP) and WRAP released a Food wastage index for the year 2019. And, it is revealed that 931 million food was wasted globally for that particular year that is roughly 17% of available food.

By the data released, it is clear that among the most contributing factor for food waste, Household waste contributes more ( 61% ). The remaining being food service and retail waste accounting 26% and 13% respectively.

A Sustainable Development Goal of SDG 12.3, to be noted here is proper usage of food, and hunger eradication from the world by 2030.

In this index, India’s per capita per year food wastage stands at 59kg, whereas global range is 121kg. Look at the picture chart above for details of other countries.

There are various solutions to food wastage. Firstly, Order or prepare food that our tummy can hold. Rather than preparing or ordering beyond the limits. Second- is proper utilisation and management of food resources, knowing about their self life. Note this, there are several edible goods that die even before reaching the consumers. Third, is the awareness of our limited resources. Actually, The food we waste can feed the hunger twice well.

Food wastage doesn’t alleviate hunger alone, it has its own chain of issues. It is seen that 8 to 10% of Global Greenhouse gas emissions are linked to the unconsumed food. By, reducing food wastage, damage to environment might be reduced further. And also, the water used in preparing food is more. Just by wasting food, environment too gets damaged.

Next time, be conscious of the food to be taken in the plate. Watch our hunger and that of the world’s.
