Italy’s Dying Town seeks UNESCO’s nod

Italy’s town named Civita di Bagnoregio – labelled as ‘The Dying Town’ seeks UNESCO’s nod, as Italy sends a proposal to add the town to heritage site, this January.

Inspite of staying aloof for years, Civita gets attention from its pen name – The Dying Town. It is crowded by domestic and foreign visitors. The town naturally protects it’s antiquity. It is also known as Badlands, as it has steep cliffs and valleys.

Looking Years back, civita used to be a large town that had road transportation to other settlements. But, recent activities of earthquakes, landslides , erosions and cracks leaves it small in size. During winter, when clouds are low, Civita looks like a floating castle hanging in the air. On a clear day, the rock on which it rests looks like a slice of a multi-layered cake.

The residents fluctuates between 10 to 14 based on the season. Before this massive corona outbreak, Civita had huge inflow of tourists travelling between Rome and Florence. And there are Road signs that guides tourists to “Civita – The Dying Town”.

“During three millennia, regressive erosion has practically reduced Civita to a nucleus, leaving the square and a few streets around it,” said Luca Costantini.

Stefano Lucarini, bought a restaurant in Civita in March, 2020, few days before lockdown.”The timing was not great,” he said.

“The environmental risk is worrying (but) we hope that for many years everyone will be able to enjoy the town,” he said.
