No OTPs from April 1, 2021 says TRAI

We keep receiving unwanted and bulk mesages from our banks frequently. Most of these messages are annoying and we keep blocking them. How long can we block ?

Owing to inflow of complaints addressed to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India( TRAI ), a new rule is imposed. Organisations that dint comply with TRAI’s protocols, will not be allowed to send OTP to their customers.

To know further, banks that do not include compulsory parameters are prone to risk. In actual sense, it requires the senders of commercial bulk SMS to register their unique SMS header ID, content and user consent on a blockchain-based platform developed by telecom operators. By doing so, customers are free from of spam.

Prior to this new rule, TRAI issued Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulations, 2018 (“TCCCPR, 2018”) on July 19, 2018, to stop this Unsolicited Commercial Communications (UCC).

Nearly 40 companies are listed by TRAI. And it includes top banks like – SBI, ICICI, HDFC. Further, it enlists Flipkart, National stock exchange, Reliance Retail.

“It has been decided that from 1st April 2021, any message failing in the scrubbing process due to noncompliance of regulatory requirements will be rejected,” said TRAI in its notification.
