Russian President signs unique legislation

Russian President, Vladimir Putin signs a legislation, that will create a way for him to be the president for 2 more tenures. Each tenure holds 6 year service.

Putin, who is currently 68 years, will be able to hold the office till his 83 ( i.e till 2036 ), after this new legislation. In addition to term of office, this legislation empowers the president to remove High court judges, reject parliament-passed laws and also assures pension payments and minimum salaries. It also includes the power of parliament to nominate the head of the Russian Government.

Back to history, Putin serves for almost 2 decades in power, not in sequence though. He was the president for two terms ( earlier each term were said to be of 4 years). As Russian constitution of 1993, didn’t support consecutive terms beyond twice, Putin became the Prime Minister in 2008. Eventually, the term of office was increased to 6 years.

So, after the end of PM’s tenure, Putin became the president in 2012 with 6 year term. Again, he won the position, in 2018. This tenure ends in 2024. Now, this new legislation is all about cancelling Putin’s earlier terms of service. Thus allowing to serve for 2 more consecutive terms.

These proposed changes were out for people’s opinions, and nearly 78% approved the same last year. So, the legislation passes in both the houses of the parliament. And now, Putin too signed it. If he serves till 2036, he will overtake Joseph Stalin as longest serving leader of Russia( Stalin serves for 42 years ).
