Researchers Find X-rays Detected From Uranus For The First Time

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) scientists have detected X-rays radiating from the Uranus, using NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory.

This may help astronomers learn more about this enigmatic planet in our solar system. However, the new study is not based on recent observations, but from those taken in 2002 and 2017. The seventh planet in the solar system, the Uranus, is a giant icy planet, with two sets of rings around its equator.  It has four times the diameter of the Earth and rotates on its side. Which makes it different from all other planets in the solar system.

Scientists used the Chandra observations taken in Uranus in 2002 and then again in 2017 to confirm the X-ray radiation. There was a clear detection of X-rays from the first observation and a possible flare of X-rays in those obtained fifteen years later.

Emitting X-rays is not new in our solar system. Venus, Saturn, even moons of Jupiter emit X-rays and others. On Jupiter, astronomers have observed that the Sun is the source of X-rays. Astronomers note that it is similar to how the Sun’s light is scatter on the moon. However, the X-rays detected from Uranus were not a result of sunlight scattering and pointed towards a possibility that there might be another source of X-rays present on the planet.

Although they believe that most of the X-rays detect from Uranus would also scattered light. There are hints that at least one other source of X-ray is present on the planet.
